What is a Live-In Caregiver?

Completing the Live-in Caregiver Program allows students to work in Canada as a professional caregiver. Caregivers are individuals who are qualified to work without supervision in a private household providing care for children, elderly persons or people who have disabilities. The live-in caregiver is required to live in the employer's home during their contracted term of employment. Similar to the Personal Support Worker, Live In Caregivers will obtain the education necessary to work with seniors, children and persons with disabilities, assisting them on a daily basis with routine activities specified by the employer.

Duties and responsibilities vary depending on the number of children and/or patients that you are caring for. Often you will be in charge of housekeeping, meal preparation, and basic medical procedures if required. You may be assisting a child with autism, a senior with Alzheimer's, or a teenager with visual or hearing impairment, thus a strong work ethic and excellent knowledge in all departments are very important. Developing personal relationships with your clients or patients are very common as a Live-In Caregiver, therefore your abilities must go beyond technique and emphasize on the value of your role and reflect true sensitivity and respect for each individual client and their family.

Program Objectives / Job Opportunities

Throughout the Live-In Caregiver program students will focus on all areas of caring for various clients and/or patients. Topics such as abuse and safety, cognitive impairment, mental health issues, personal hygiene, meal preparation, household management, adaptive equipment and palliative training will be highlighted during the course. Robetech students have the advantage of working within our fully equipped simulated hospital room and practical nursery room, as well as training of kitchen and laundry duties to assist in household maintenance. With equipments ranging from wheelchairs, hoya lifts and functioning hospital beds, students will have all the hands on practice needed to feel comfortable and confident when caring for patients of all ages and abilities.

Once you have earned your diploma as a Live-In Caregiver you may continue your studies to obtain the Personal Support Worker diploma with completion of an additional 365 hours. Once these additional hours are completed, you may sit for the NACC (National Association of Career Colleges) PSW Certification Examination. Please note there is a additional fee for the extra hours.

This program meets the requirements of the Canadian Embassy under the Foreign Live-In Caregiver Program. This program is offered on a full time basis in accordance to the regulations of the Canadian Embassy for FLCP.
