What is a Physiotherapy Assistant?

The physiotherapist assistant (PTA) is a skilled health care provider, who will be working with individuals and their families under the direction of a licensed physiotherapist in providing client physiotherapy care services.  PTA will apply a variety of therapy treatments in diverse health care settings, and your role will be focused in assisting in the treatment and prevention of physical disabilities, movement dysfunction and pain resulting from injury, disease, disability, or other health related conditions.   Part of the PTA role also focuses in documentation of the progress of treatment plans prescribed by a physiotherapist.



What is an Occupational Therapy Assistant?

The Occupational Therapist Assistant (OTA) is a skilled health care provider, who will be working with individuals and their families under the direction or supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist.  By providing rehabilitative services to people with various mental, emotional, physical, or developmental impairments, your focus will be in assisting in development of treatment plans and procedures, carrying out routine functions, directing activity programs, and documenting the progress of treatments prescribed by an occupational therapist.



Program Objectives / Job Opportunities

The Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Assistant diploma program focuses on the most important areas in the field, including but not limited to: development and function of the human body and rehabilitation plans & techniques.  The significance of frames of reference and patient charting are introduced early in the program, including mock therapy sessions concentrating on various disabilities help the student develop the proper communication skills in this field.  Robetech students have the advantage of working within our simulated massage and rehabilitation practical rooms which offers various machines and equipments.  Students are taught to prepare treatment areas and equipment, and to implement different treatment programs, including but not limited to therapeutic exercises, gait training activities, activities of daily living, activity analysis, transfers techniques, wheelchair measurements and fitting, heat and cold physical agents, electrotherapy agents (TENS – IFC- EMS machine, etc), mechanical physical agents (ultrasound, whirlpool, traction etc), massage techniques, basic splinting, assistive devices and other various treatment procedures.  The student also develops skills in providing encouragement and reassurance to clients as they help them deal with their illness and assist them in achieving their full potential.
